What Are Advanced Placement Courses?
Some students know they want to go deeper in specific subjects, and they want a credential that proves they have done university-level work while still in high school. Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide exactly that.
AP is a programme developed by the College Board. Students take university-level courses during high school and sit externally assessed exams recognised by universities worldwide. Strong results can earn advanced standing or course credit at many institutions.
AP courses at XWA follow the same inquiry-driven approach that shapes the school's IB programmes. Students engage with advanced content, practise academic writing, conduct independent research, and apply critical thinking at a high level.
AP Courses Available at XWA
Each AP course gives your child a university-recognised credential in a specific subject area. These are the courses available now, with plans to add more based on what students need and where they are heading after graduation.
AP World History: Modern (Grade 11)
Develops historical thinking, evidence-based writing, and argumentation.
AP Environmental Science (Grade 11)
Builds data interpretation and scientific reasoning across major environmental systems and issues.
AP Human Geography (Grade 12)
Explores how people, places, and systems interact, strengthening analytical and research skills.
Build a Pathway That Fits Your Child
At XWA, AP sits inside a flexible pathway model, so students can blend AP with IB and High School Diploma (HSD) courses to create an academic profile that fits their strengths, interests, and university plans.
Here are two common ways families use that flexibility:
- AP + HSD: for students who want a strong GPA and targeted exam-based credentials in subjects that support their intended major.
- AP + IB Diploma courses: for students who want a more personalised pathway by combining university-level AP courses with selected IB Diploma subjects aligned to their strengths, interests, and future goals.
Pathway decisions are made with support from Grade 10 onwards, with input from university counsellors and programme coordinators so families can choose a combination that is both ambitious and manageable.
How AP Supports University Applications
AP is a globally recognised pre-university qualification. Many universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia accept AP exam scores as evidence of university-level academic readiness. At many universities, higher AP scores may earn course credit or advanced standing, allowing students to skip introductory courses or graduate earlier.
For students applying to competitive programmes, AP results can strengthen an application because they show academic ambition and genuine depth in specific subjects. Combined with support from XWA's university and career counselling team, students can present a clear and credible academic story.
What matters most is choosing AP subjects strategically. XWA's university counsellors help families map course and exam choices to destination systems and intended fields of study, so AP supports the application story rather than adding pressure for its own sake.

APコースが向いている生徒
