XWA's incoming academic leadership team brings more than 72 years of combined international education experience
XCL World Academy (XWA) announced the appointment of Maria Sweeney as Head of School, marking a new and exciting chapter for one of Singapore's leading international schools.
Maria's appointment reflects XCL World Academy's commitment to leadership continuity, long-term strategic planning, and educational excellence. Having served as the Early and Primary Years Principal since 2024, Maria has played a key role in strengthening the student experience and fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and academic growth across the school community.

Bringing more than 36 years of experience in education, including 17 years in international schools, Maria has served as Head of School, Director of Curriculum, and Principal across leading international schools in Rome, California, and NewYork City. Since joining XWA in 2024 as Early and Primary Years Principal, she has been instrumental in advancing the school's strategic vision, helping to strengthen the student experience while championing innovation, future-ready learning, and academic excellence. Her leadership has contributed to the introduction of initiatives such as Little Xplorers and Xpeditions experiential learning and XCLerate future skills programmes, further enhancing XWA's commitment to developing confident, curious, and globally minded learners.
The appointment follows a planned leadership transition and succeeds Tammy Murphy, whose three years as Head of School were marked by significant growth and transformation. Under Tammy's leadership, XWA strengthened its reputation as one of Singapore's leading international schools, expanded its academic pathways, championed the integration of AI skills education and emerging technologies into teaching and learning, invested in future-focused programmes and facilities, and further enhanced the school's vibrant and globally minded community. Her leadership helped position XWA at the forefront of educational innovation, ensuring students are equipped with the skills, mindsets, and adaptability needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
"It is a privilege to take on this role and build on the strong foundations established at XWA. I look forward to working alongside our students, families, and staff to continue delivering a personalised, future-focused education while nurturing a community where every learner can thrive." said Maria Sweeney, incoming Head of School, XCL World Academy
A Leadership Team of Exceptional Depth
Alongside Maria's appointment, XWA has confirmed further strengthening of its academic leadership across both school divisions.

Since joining XWA, Justin has helped strengthen the school's approach to student achievement by supporting teachers to combine learning evidence, assessment data, and professional judgement to better understand student progress and deliver more responsive, personalised learning experiences. His appointment has been warmly welcomed by families, students, and colleagues who know his commitment to student success firsthand.
